Our mental models and perspectives are like the roadmaps that help us to navigate the world. They help us to make sense of our surroundings and experiences. But what happens when those maps are outdated or incomplete without us realizing this? Imagine using that inadequate map when hiking a vast forest. The path behind you is worn and familiar, while ahead lies an expanse of uncharted territory. In the forthcoming articles, we will share stories of individuals escaping the limits of their mental models and perspectives. The journey of each of these individuals was filled with uncertainty yet illuminated by the promise of discovery and transformation. Maybe their stories will resonate with some of your own experiences.

Alex’s story: The tale of a fearless explorer

I met Alex for the first time when he was a mid-level manager in an automotive corporation. Alex's mental model of leadership was shaped by a culture that equated authority with control and success with long hours. This perspective directed his decisions and how he interacted with his team. Yet, it also acted as a barrier, preventing Alex from seeing the potential in flexible work arrangements and the value of fostering a supportive team environment.

Recognizing Alex's considerable but underutilized potential, the company's HR team decided to provide him with coaching sessions aimed at enhancing his creative intelligence, innovative thinking, and prioritizing employee well-being. It was through this initiative that the limitations of Alex's traditional leadership model began to unravel.

In a quiet, well-lit office, the atmosphere was charged with the anticipation of new beginnings as I prepared to meet Alex for our first in-person session in Irvine, California. The company had briefed me on Alex's situation and had also discussed some of the coahing objectives with Alex, but it was the face-to-face interaction that would truly unveil the depth of Alex's leadership perspective.

"Good morning, Alex. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm here to work together with you on expanding your leadership skills, particularly around creative intelligence and innovative thinking. How do you feel about our journey ahead?" I began, hoping to ease into the conversation.

Alex shifted slightly in his chair, a mix of curiosity and caution in his eyes. "Honestly, I'm not sure what to expect. I've always believed in the principles I've followed. Control, decisiveness, and putting in the work - that's what got me here."

Nodding, I acknowledged Alex's viewpoint. "Those are certainly important qualities. Let's explore that a bit. How do you think these principles have influenced your team's environment and their well-being?"

There was a pause as Alex considered the question. "Well, I suppose it's created a disciplined team. But if I'm being honest, it's probably not the most creative or happiest space. I've noticed some signs of strain."

"That's a valuable observation, Alex. Recognizing there's room for growth is the first step. How would you feel about exploring ways to lead that not only drive results but also enhance your team's creativity and satisfaction?"

Alex leaned forward, interest piqued despite initial reservations. "I'm interested, but it's not something I'm familiar with. How do we achieve that without losing control and compromising on the success we've been driving towards?"

"Excellent question," I responded, encouraged by his willingness to engage. "True control lies in empowering your team, not micromanaging. A focus on well-being, flexibility, and creativity doesn't diminish hard work—it enriches it, nurturing an environment ripe for innovation. How does this align with your approach?"

Alex's expression showed a blend of contemplation and realization. "I've never looked at it that way. It sounds...refreshing. But also challenging."

"It will be a journey, Alex, with its own set of challenges and learning curves. But the outcomes can be transformative for you and your team. Are you ready to embark on this path and see where it can take your leadership?"

With a tentative yet genuine smile, Alex nodded. "Yes, I am. Let's see how we can break down these barriers."

Our conversation laid the foundation for a transformative coaching relationship. By gently challenging Alex's existing mental model and inviting him to consider alternative approaches, we began dismantling the barriers that hindered his and his team's potential. This first meeting was just the beginning of Alex's journey towards embracing a more flexible, supportive, and innovative leadership style.

Motivated by the insights from his coaching sessions and fueled by a newfound curiosity, Alex set off on a path to discover alternative approaches to leadership. This exploration led him to adopt principles of empathy, teamwork, and a balanced approach to work and life. Such a shift not only catalyzed Alex's development as a leader but also resulted in increased productivity and greater satisfaction among his team members. Breaking free from the constraints of his previous mindset, Alex experienced remarkable career advancement. He has since ascended to a key position within the company's executive leadership team, positioning himself as a prime candidate in the eyes of the CEO for future succession.

In a recent conversation, Alex shared, "Opening my mindset and changing my perspectives was like stepping into a new world. I realized that leadership isn't about wielding control but about empowering others to reach their full potential. Embracing flexibility, creativity, and a focus on well-being didn't just transform our team's dynamics; it revolutionized my entire approach to success. It's been an eye-opening journey, one that's taught me the true value of adaptability and innovation in leadership."
