“Football is a brain game; where to run, when to run, when to cover, when to press, when to move, how to move. It is decisions like these that come from the brain that determines whether you are a good player or not”. - Johan Cruyff

Mental performance coaching has become essential to soccer in recent years. It involves using various techniques and strategies to help players optimize their cognitive skills and overcome any psychological barriers limiting their performance on the field.

When it comes to the mental aspects of soccer, certain terms can have varying meanings depending on whom you ask. Therefore, before delving into the benefits of mental performance coaching, it's necessary to clarify the differences between mindset, mental performance skills, and mental strength within the context of sports.

Although mindset, mental performance skills, and mental strength are interconnected concepts, they each hold unique definitions.

·     Mindset: Refers to the mental framework and attitudes that shape how a person approaches situations, tasks, and challenges. It refers to a general overview of how a person thinks, feels, and makes sense of the world around them. A mindset can be fixed or growth-oriented. A fixed mindset believes that traits such as intelligence and talent are innate and cannot be changed, while a growth mindset believes that skills can be developed through effort and practice. Changing a fixed mindset can be challenging but possible with effort and practice. Additional information on how to attain this can be found in my blog post about mindsets.

·     Mental Performance Skills: Refers to the specific cognitive and psychological skills necessary for optimal performance in a particular domain. Mental performance skills can be trained and developed over time. Examples of mental performance skills include goal-setting, visualization, concentration, self-talk, and relaxation techniques.

·     Mental Strength: Refers to the psychological attributes that empower a player to cope with stress, pressure, and adversity. It pertains to an athlete's capacity to effectively apply mental skills to consciously decide how to respond to challenging situations and perform under pressure. Mental strength comprises resilience, perseverance, determination, and the capability to sustain focus during demanding circumstances. It is developed through experiences of adversity and the deliberate practice of mental performance skills.

The degree of mental strength you possess directly correlates to your level of success in sports.

While mindset and mental performance skills play a crucial role in achieving peak performance, mental strength is a distinct characteristic that empowers individuals to persevere and excel in challenging circumstances. Mental strength allows players to push forward despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. In soccer, mental strength is demonstrated through a powerful combination of resiliency, confidence, and self-discipline. Developing mental strength requires maintaining a healthy striving mentality and consistent mental performance training to enable conscious decision-making and avoid impulsive reactions that can lead to loss of control.

Listed below are several reasons why mental performance coaching is vital in soccer.

1.    Confidence: Soccer players who lack confidence often struggle to perform at their best. Mental performance coaching can help players build their confidence by teaching them how to manage negative self-talk, focus on their strengths, and visualize success.

2.    Focus: Players must sustain their focus during a game to make prompt decisions and competently execute their skills. Mental performance coaching can educate players on disregarding distractions and maintaining concentration under pressure.

3.    Resilience: Soccer is a physically and mentally demanding sport that requires players to be able to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing themselves to improve. Mental performance coaching can help players develop the resilience they need to overcome obstacles and strive for success.

4.    Stress management: Soccer players often experience high-stress levels, particularly in high-pressure games. Mental performance coaching can teach players how to manage their stress levels and stay calm under pressure.

5.    Team cohesion: Mental performance coaching can also help improve team cohesion by teaching players how to communicate effectively, build trust with their teammates, and develop a shared sense of purpose.

"The most important distance in football is the few inches between your brain and your foot."

Here are a few examples of soccer teams that work with mental performance coaches to improve their players' mental skills and overall performance.

·     Liverpool Football Club: Liverpool has a mental performance coach, Lee Richardson, who works closely with the team to develop mental toughness, resilience, and emotional intelligence.

·     Manchester City Football Club: Manchester City has a team of psychologists who work with players to improve their mental performance. The team also has a mental performance coach, Tom Bates, who focuses on developing player resilience and confidence.

·     Tottenham Hotspur Football Club: Tottenham Hotspur has a sports psychologist, Dr. Greg Whyte, who works with players to improve their mental performance. He uses various techniques, including mindfulness, visualization, and goal setting.

·     Paris Saint-Germain Football Club: PSG has a mental performance coach, Dr. Lionel Maugain, who works with players to help them manage pressure, cope with stress, and build confidence.

·     FC Barcelona: FC Barcelona has a mental performance coach, Joaquim Valdés, who works with players to improve their mental toughness and emotional intelligence. He uses meditation, visualization, and goal-setting techniques to help players perform at their best.

·     Arsenal Football Club: Arsenal has a team of sports psychologists who work with players to improve their mental performance. They focus on developing resilience, emotional control, and confidence.

·     AC Milan: AC Milan has a mental performance coach, Ivan Ferrero, who works with players to improve their mental resilience, focus, and emotional control. He also helps them cope with pressure and deal with setbacks.

In summary

In recent years, mental performance coaching has gained significant importance in soccer. As the game has evolved, so has the understanding of the necessity of mental preparation and performance for athletes. Players who master the game's mental aspects will have a significant advantage over those who do not. Mental performance coaching teaches techniques to enhance focus, concentration, and emotional regulation while also providing strategies to cope with pressure, overcome obstacles, and accomplish goals. It benefits individual players and enhances team dynamics, and thus, has become an integral part of soccer training, with many teams and players incorporating it into their training programs.
