In the fast-paced world of business, where competition is intense and where change is the only constant, traditional skills and academic knowledge, while valuable, might not be sufficient to stand out as a leader. Drawing from my experience working with over 200 Executive MBA students at the Booth School of Business, I have come to realize that genuine leadership extends beyond these measures. It is about unlocking what I like to call an individual's "Superpowers" – those talents and unique abilities that form the core of their wisdom.

Recognizing the Superpowers
What exactly are these superpowers, these extraordinary abilities? In the realm of business leadership, they represent distinctive strengths that set an individual apart. They go beyond the skills or competencies listed on a resume.  These are deeply ingrained qualities that, when effectively harnessed, can lead to leadership and success in one's career. Think of it as discovering the unique essence that makes each leader special – something that can't be replicated or taught in a traditional setting.

The good news perspective is that we all possess superpowers

The Journey of Self-Discovery
This journey toward self-discovery and personal growth goes beyond introspection. This process involves a blend of self-assessment, peer feedback, and coaching activities. It's about peeling back the layers to reveal what truly drives a person, what their values and passions are, and how these can be translated into effective leadership.

Here's a simple exercise you can do at home to discover your strengths. First, make a list of what you believe are your strengths or "superpowers." Then, without sharing this list, ask at least three people close to you, such as family members, close friends, or trusted colleagues, about their perceptions of your strengths. Once you have their answers, compare them with your list. You might be pleasantly surprised by the insights gained from this exercise!

Integrating Superpowers into Leadership
Identifying these superpowers is the starting point. The real challenge – and opportunity – lies in integrating them into one's leadership style. In our coaching practice we go beyond these strengths;  we provide our clients with the tools and confidence to effectively utilize these strengths on high-pressure or high-stakes business situations. This might involve honing one’s ability for leadership, strategic thinking, or innovative problem-solving, and understanding how to apply these skills when they are most needed.

Impact on the Professional World
The implications of this approach in the executive world are significant. Graduates from our coaching program frequently report a renewed sense of purpose and effectiveness in their roles. But it's not just the individuals who notice the difference – employers do too. A leader who understands and utilizes their strengths tends to be more versatile, innovative, and influential. They bring a fresh perspective and a dynamic approach to challenges, setting themselves apart in the world of business.

It's important to acknowledge that discovering and embracing one's strengths goes beyond a mental exercise; it's an adaptive challenge that reshapes careers and leadership styles. For a professional this journey is an invaluable part of becoming a leader. It involves continuous learning and self-discovery and leveraging that knowledge to make an impact in the business world and beyond.
