Team coaching is a relatively new addition to coaching services provided to organizations. This article explores the purpose and objective of team coaching.

Why would an organization choose for team coaching?

The purpose of team coaching is to help teams enhance their performance. Similar to coaching a sports team, coaching a work team focuses on improving group and individual skills. In this process, a coach collaborates with a group of managers or executives, providing them with a platform to potentialize their existing capabilities.

What distinguishes team coaching from other team development activities?

Team coaching is founded on a set of beliefs that shape the coach's approach even before they begin working with a team. These beliefs assist the coach in developing their mindset, including their assumptions and expectations about the work performed by the team.

Four core beliefs lay the foundation for coaching:

Belief No. 1: The primary mission of the team is to achieve results.

Teams are formed with the sole purpose of attaining goals or desired outcomes. This goal-oriented existence serves as an aspect of successful team coaching.

Belief No. 2: Teams are living organisms.

Viewing a team as a living system takes a dynamic approach to understanding how teams behave and how effective they are. This perspective acknowledges that, like a living organism, a team is made up of interconnected parts that work together to create something more significant than the sum of its individual components.

Belief No. 3: Team members strive to be part of achieving groups.

Team member's desire to be part of teams stems from our connection to fundamental human needs ranging from basic survival to reaching our full potential. Being part of a thriving team provides stability and security. It also fosters an environment that nurtures belonging, boosts self-esteem, and opens doors for personal growth. Together, these aspects contribute to a fulfilling and enriching work experience.

Belief No. 4: The team possesses the resources needed for excellence.

This concept highlights the idea that the team already has the resources, skills, and potential for performance and results. It involves recognizing and leveraging the team's strengths, cultivating a collaborative culture, improving communication channels, promoting continuous learning, establishing a shared vision, and empowering individual team members. Guided by this belief during coaching processes, it inspires teams to tap into their capabilities to achieve greatness.
Team coaching plays a role in assisting teams to adapt behaviors, apply their learnings, and enhance their collaborative efforts.

One significant advantage is improving communication among team members through collaboration with a coach. By doing so, they learn to communicate effectively with one another. This leads to collaboration, reduced stress levels, and the creation of efficient work processes.

Team coaching emphasizes the significance of building relationships within the team. For the team to thrive, each member needs to contribute their skills and expand their capabilities for the well-being and performance of the team. Through working with a team coach, members identify areas where they can improve their skills to contribute to the success of the team and organization.
